  3. As a new member of the IHNA, it is nice to know that the police station, on Irvington Avenue, is up and running, thanks to the IHNA. There are cars in the parking lot, that one can barely see through the newly installed fence, and few officers visible up front when one passes by. But I am sure they are there. Also, having the new 4311 “Non-Emergency” phone number for the City of Newark is a plus. I have used the number; the employees are courteous, helpful, and well informed. So far, so good! The is, by far, one of the best things the mayor has done for us residents, it beats being ignored!

The mid-block crosswalk, unfortunately, that served our community for decades, has yet to be replaced, in front of Mount Vernon Elementary school, in spite of our complaints as parents whose children cross this section of the street during the academic school year. And it still puzzles me how a city engineer can tell a resident of Ivy Hill, such as myself, back in April of 2010 that, “It was not reinstalled because it had been illegally established. There is not an ordinance to indicate the legality of that mid block crosswalk.” To not have an idea how and why the mid-block crosswalk was put there in the first place, no records or documents to support such; or even why it was warranted, is short of amazing. Aren’t there records? Surely the county, state, or federal government wouldn’t take it upon themselves to put such a mid-block crosswalk on a city-governed street, without probable cause; or maybe they did, and they have the “Ordinance.” And this is not to negate the fact that there is a mid-block crosswalk in front of Alexander Street School, which is located in the city of Newark, on a one-way street that is not as dangerous as our Mt. Vernon two-way street. We now have a camera on Mount Vernon and Manor Drive that should have, by now, capture the essence of our mid-block crosswalk complaint.

It is also nice to see that the Ivy Hill Park is under renovation; but, it is unfortunate that our four tennis courts are still an eye sore, and a health hazard--as one can, inevitably, hurts one’s ankle while playing tennis on the many cracks and overgrown grass. I have said it before, and I will say it again, we need our courts and a practice wall, similar to the vacant practice wall located in Weequahic Park. Why can’t the county just take down that wall and schlep it to Ivy Hill Park, and install for us? It’s a thought…

Each year we all look forward to the International Food Festival, and this year will be no exception. It is an International Food Festival that represents our diversity in this community—one that represents over 50 countries. And this why our community has been known, for many years, as the “Little United Nations.” With that said, I think, with all the hard work of the IHNA, and its newly elected President, Bertha Freeman, this is going to be a very special Festival. The Ivy Hill Park renovations are to be completed, prior to the International Food Festival, making for an evening of entertainment and food to be remembered. So, to all of you who plan to attend, don’t forget your chairs, food/monetary donation(s), vendor money for those who will be on site, and your bug spray for the mosquitoes. Hopefully, we will get a good mosquito spray from the county, prior to the event, ensuring us an even better evening.

    Sincerely,
    Janell Richison
